Micro-mesh gutter guards run $7 to $14 per linear foot installed, with $10 typical. On an average home that’s roughly $1,300 to $2,600.

The number most people find surprising is the comparison: that is about what new aluminium gutters cost. Guards are not a cheap add-on to a gutter system — they’re a comparable investment to the gutters themselves.

How much roofline you actually have

Guards are priced by the foot, so the first thing that decides your cost is how much roof edge you have — and that isn’t your square footage.

A 2,000 square foot single-storey home has roughly 190 linear feet of roofline. That comes from the perimeter of the footprint, and it scales with the square root of the area rather than with the area itself.

Which produces a counterintuitive result: a two-storey home has less roofline than a single-storey home of the same size. Stack the floors and the footprint halves, so the perimeter shrinks — roughly 133 feet instead of 190. Same house, roughly 30% less gutter.

That’s the same geometry that makes roofing cheaper on a two-storey house and siding more expensive. Gutters follow the roof.

What the numbers cover

The chart above is installed cost — material and the labour to fit it. Three things sit outside it.

Gutter condition. Guards fasten to the gutter, and the gutter fastens to the fascia. If either is failing, that work comes first and it isn’t included.

Gutter replacement. If the gutters are going anyway, doing both at once costs less than doing them separately, because the crew and the setup are shared.

Cleaning before install. A gutter has to be clear before it’s covered. Gutter cleaning runs $100 to $300 as a service call.

  1. Fascia board — The board the whole system hangs from. Soft fascia means the gutter has nothing to hold on to.
  2. Hangers — Brackets fastened through the gutter into the fascia, typically every two feet.
  3. Gutter — The channel. Its size and slope decide how much water it can carry.
  4. Guard — Sits on or in the gutter, or slides under the first shingle course depending on the type.
  5. Shingle course — Some guard types tuck beneath it. This is where a bad install can lift shingles or void a roof warranty.

The roof edge, structure outward. A guard is the last piece added, and it depends on everything beneath it being sound.

Against the cost of cleaning

The comparison worth doing is not against nothing — it’s against continuing to clean.

Cleaning runs $100 to $300 per visit, typically twice a year. Guards on a 190-foot roofline at $10 a foot come to roughly $1,900. That’s equivalent to somewhere between five and ten years of professional cleaning, depending on your rates and how many visits your trees demand.

Whether that’s worth it depends almost entirely on how much your gutters actually fill. A house under mature deciduous trees and a house on an open lot are answering completely different questions with the same product.

What guards don’t do is eliminate maintenance entirely, whatever the marketing says. Fine grit, shingle granules and pine needle fragments still accumulate on top of a mesh, and guards need occasional attention — just far less, and usually from the ground rather than a ladder.

What moves the price

Guard type. Micro-mesh sits at the higher end and blocks the most. Simpler screens and foam inserts cost less and admit more.

Roofline complexity. Corners, dormers, valleys and multiple rooflines add cuts and fitting time, the same way trim does on a siding job.

Storeys. Higher work means ladders, staging and slower progress, even though there is less roofline to cover.

Gutter condition. The most common source of a quote coming in above expectation.

Your market. The same job runs 14% below national in some ZIP codes and 23% above in others.

Getting a number for your house

The rates on this page are national and per foot. What your job costs depends on your roofline length, the guard type and your market.
